Lead Custodian & Handyman

Charlton Baptist Church has an immediate opening for a 23 hour per week position. This job is being posted for the next 2 weeks and will end on 2/15/25. A general description of the position includes: general cleaning, floor care, minor carpentry work, painting, and the ordering of church supplies. Applications are available on the Event Center counter in the main foyer and can be returned either to the chuch office or be e-mailed to hiring@charltonbaptist.org

Job Description

General Responsibilities

  • Responsible for maintaining all downstairs areas; classrooms, offices, hallways, bathrooms, large kitchen, and gym.

  • To be available throughout the week for scheduled activities; setting up and breaking down.

  • Responsible for maintaining adequate levels of all paper products and cleaning supplies. When supplies are getting low, replacements are to be ordered.

  • All areas are to be cleaned and ready for Sunday service as close to Sunday as possible.

  • On Sunday afternoon or Monday am a walkthrough with light cleaning and empting of trash bins is expected.

  • Responsible for snow removal of sidewalks and entranceways.

  • Responsible for verifying, whenever possible, the church building is closed up tight and locked.

  • Water filters checked and replaced as needed, on a weekly basis.

Weekly Checklist of Necessary Items

  • Classrooms:    

    • Clean/wipe down all tables and chairs.  

    • Chalkboards and dry erase boards cleaned, as needed.

    • Floors to be dry mopped and cleaned.

  •  Hallways: 

    • Hall floors are to be dry mopped and cleaned.

    • Walls wiped down as needed.

 

  • Bathrooms:

    • Floor swept and cleaned.

    • All toilets and sinks wiped down and sterilized.

    • All paper products and soaps restocked.

    • Dividers and counters wiped down.

    • Mirrors cleaned as necessary.

  • Kitchen:

    • Floor dry mopped and cleaned.

    • Counters and appliances wiped down and cleaned.

 

  • Gym:

    • Floor to be dry mopped on a regular basis.

    • Floor cleaned with floor machine roughly once a month or as needed.

    • Wall padding to be wiped down as needed.

  • Offices

    • Floors to be vacuumed.

    • Rooms to be dusted as needed.

 

  • Other/Miscellaneous:

    • Inside of elevator to be wiped down.

    • Floor of elevator to be swept and cleaned.

    • All glass entrance doors to be cleaned.

Asst. Custodian Responsibilities
(For Info. Only)

  • Responsible for maintaining upstairs areas; Foyer, Bathrooms, Kitchen, Nursery, Parents room, Sanctuary, Choir room, Back hall and both sets of stairs.

  • Upstairs area is expected to be cleaned and completed on Saturday.  If there is a late evening event, cleaning and picking up is expected as a minimum after the event. 

  • On Sunday afternoon or Monday am a walkthrough with light cleaning and empting of trash bins is expected.

  • Responsible for verifying, whenever possible, the church building is closed up tight and locked.

  • Mow lawn and trim as needed. Keep machinery in good running order.

Weekly Checklist of Necessary Items (For Info. Only

  • Foyer Areas:

    • Hardwood floor dry mopped.

    • First Saturday of the month hardwood floors to be cleaned with cleaning system for wood

    • VCT floors dry mopped and cleaned on schedule.

    • All furniture to be arranged for Sunday services and bulletins in place.

    • All glass doors to be cleaned.

    • Windows to be cleaned on a monthly schedule.

  • Bathrooms:

    • Floor swept and cleaned.

    • All toilets and sinks wiped down and sterilized.

    • All paper products and soaps restocked.

    • Dividers and counters wiped down.

    • Mirrors cleaned as necessary.

  • Kitchen:

    • Floor dry mopped and cleaned.

    • Counters and appliances wiped down and cleaned.

  • Parents Room:

    • Vacuum rug

    • Furniture and books rearranged

    • Glass window to sanctuary cleaned

    • During winter months verify electric heat is turned on for Sunday mornings.

  • Nursery:

    • Floor vacuumed and cleaned as needed.

    • Counters and sinks wiped down and cleaned.

    • Room dusted as needed. 

  • Sanctuary:

    • Floors dry mopped and cleaned.

    • Chairs organized/arranged.

    • All areas dusted except musical instruments.

    • Windows cleaned and blinds closed for Sunday service.

    • All carpeted areas vacuumed.

    • Stage set up appropriate for Sunday services, chairs, podiums etc.

  • Choir Room and Back Hall:

    • Carpeted areas vacuumed.

    • Area dusted as needed.

  • Stairs:

    • Swept or vacuumed and wet mopped.

    • Handrails wiped down.

  • Outside:

    • Salt sidewalks on Sunday mornings before service when needed.
